Overview

What is a Design System and why is it important?

The design system at Decent DAO is defined as a set of connected patterns and shared practices that guide how digital products are designed and built.

Consistency

A unified design language improves visual and functional quality, which enhances user experiences across different products.

Efficiency

using components, allowing quick deployment of new features. Even if not explicitly labeled as such, Decent has been using design systems through external tools and frameworks.

We were already doing it

Even if not explicitly labeled as such, Decent has been using design systems through external tools and frameworks such as UI kits, CSS frameworks, and other established Design Systems.

Fundamentals

Key Components

Style Guide

The core elements that underpin the design system, such as colors, typography, spacing, and grid systems. These components establish a consistent visual language across all platforms.

Components & Patterns

Composable, reusable, and customizable, these building blocks promote efficiency and consistency across design and development.

Patterns offer guidance for addressing recurring design problems, helping teams maintain a consistent user experience while allowing for flexibility and scalability.

Principles

Ground to Stand On

Decent's approach to managing its design system is like gardening rather than architecture. Instead of rigid planning, the system is allowed to grow organically. As products and needs evolve, the system is cultivated—weeded, trimmed, or expanded as necessary.

“A gardener plants seeds and tends to them, but doesn't know exactly what the garden will look like. They intervene as needed to guide its growth.”
– José Torre (Shopify UX)

Collaboration & Transparency

Decent values open communication and collaboration. Work on the design system is shared publicly via Discord channels and other tools to promote transparency of the design system’s evolution.

Summary

What we Learned

Decent DAO’s design system is not just about creating visual consistency; it’s an evolving practice that enables faster product development, scalable design processes, and collaboration across teams. Its organic, gardener-like approach ensures that the system grows and adapts to new challenges, ensuring it remains relevant and functional as Decent’s product offerings evolve.
